Who can win a SMOTY Award?
Anyone responsible for the production of a trade show is eligible. This award is about the person and not the show itself. Show managers who have demonstrated their ability to be committed, innovative and focused on customer service will find themselves receiving this special recognition. This award is open to any show manager in the industry regardless of any affiliation with The Expo Group.
How can someone be nominated for a SMOTY Award?
Anyone may nominate an outstanding show manager to win the award. Past nominees have been suggested by co-workers, exhibitors, vendors, board members, supervisors and themselves.
How much does it cost to nominate someone?
Just your time and effort. There is no fee to nominate someone.
What qualities should a SMOTY winner exhibit?
All nominees should show innovative practices, premier customer service, commitment to success and the ability to overcome obstacles.
Are there different levels or categories?
Yes, there are 5 categories
  • Tier 1: 1 to 150 booths
  • Tier 2: 151 to 300 booths
  • Tier 3: 301 to 700 booths
  • Tier 4: 701 to 1500 booths
  • Tier 5: 1501 or more booths
What does a SMOTY Winner actually win?
Winners receive:
  • A custom crystal trophy
  • $1000 check to favorite charity
  • Hotel, airfare and transportation to and from awards show
  • Recognition in the trade show industry
Who selects the winners?
A panel of industry veterans review and vote for their choice. The Expo Group is not involved in the selection process.
How did this whole SMOTY thing get started?
Ray Pekowski, President and CEO of The Expo Group, wanted to do something special for the show managers throughout the industry that don’t get the recognition that they deserve. Read more about the history of the SMOTYs to find out more.
