(Irving, Texas, USA)
- The Expo Group announced five winners of its Show Manager of the Year (SMOTY) Awards, which are presented annually to great show managers in five categories.

For 2002, The Expo Group Show Managers of the Year are:

·         Tier V – 1,501+ booths: Mary C. Upton, Vice President of Tradeshow Operations, ASI Show, for The ASI Show!, which was held in four locations and includes upward of 2,200 booths per show

“We congratulate all the nominees and winners of this year’s awards. We received more nominations than ever before,” says Ray Pekowski, President of The Expo Group. “That made competition very tough for our panel of independent judges.  We started these awards to honor the show managers who make our industry great, who exemplify a can-do spirit and infuse each of their events with creativity. More nominations means more show managers are being more innovative, more creative and more resourceful than ever before. That’s exactly what our industry needs right now.”

The Expo Group SMOTY Awards were first awarded in 2000. Each year in December, a formal dinner and awards ceremony is held to present each winner with his or her trophy and $1,000 to be given in the winner’s name to the charity or educational institute of their choice. This year, the awards ceremony will be held on Dec. 11 at Lake Nona Country Club in Orlando, Fla.

SMOTY candidates are nominated by superiors, colleagues, exhibitors and suppliers. Each nominator submits a 500-word-or-less essay describing why the candidate deserves to be recognized as Show Manager of the Year. The 2002 SMOTY awards were judged by Darlene Gudea, Publisher, Tradeshow Executive Magazine; Michael Hough, president, MRH Associates; Barbara Silverman, BLS and Associates; Donald Svehla, Publisher, Exhibit City News; and Danica Vasos, Publisher, EXPO Magazine.
